Presentation at the 2nd National Workshop for Media Literacy

We are pleased to announce that Dr Eleni A. Kyza, Media Cognition and Learning Research Group’s Lead, has been invited to give a presentation at the 2nd National Workshop for Media Literacy on “Media literacy, critical thinking and freedom of expression: perspectives and dilemmas”.

Dr Kyza’s presentation will focus on a key component of digital citizenship, a key aspect of media literacy, and is titled “Cultivating critical thinking as an essential component of digital citizenship”.

The conference is organized by Cyprus Pedagogical Institute and European University Cyprus as part of the EU-funded project “European MediaCoach Initiative -EMCI”. The conference will be held online on Monday 22nd of March, 2021.

Keynote Speaker at the 5th National Conference “Chemistry in Education”

Dr Eleni A. Kyza, Media Cognition and Learning Research Group’s Lead, has been invited as a keynote speaker at the 5th National Chemistry in Education Conference, entitled “Teaching Chemistry: Timeless and Contemporary Challenges”, which will be held online on Saturday, March 20th, 2021.

The title of Dr Kyza’s keynote presentation is “Pandemic and online learning: Challenges and strategies for activating interest and promoting learning in the modern techno-scape”.

The conference is organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, Cyprus University of Technology, University of Cyprus, Pancyprian Union Of Chemists, Association of Chemistry Teachers (OELMEK).

Description:This Ph.D. thesis will explore the context in which citizens (younger or older) can develop digital skills, knowledge, and attitudes that lead to empowerment, the adoption of democratic ideals and the development of digital citizenship.

Required Qualifications: To be considered, eligible candidates should have undergraduate and graduate degrees from accredited universities in a related subject. Candidates should be able to demonstrate strong methodological background and should be highly proficient in spoken and written English.  The applicants are requested to submit a) their CV, b) a short research proposal explaining their research interests and the motivation for the proposed research project, and c) two letters of recommendation, preferably from University professors (submitted independently and within the application deadline).

Funding: Depending on their field of expertise and qualifications, candidates may be offered teaching assistant positions in the department for lab-based courses. Moreover, funding may be available through on-going research projects.

Description: This Ph.D. thesis will investigate technology-mediated collaboration and learning, using technologies such as mobile devices, the internet, augmented reality technologies, social media, etc. Emphasis will be placed on the investigation of the interaction between social, affective and cognitive dimensions of successful collaborations.

Required Qualifications: To be considered, eligible candidates should have undergraduate and graduate degrees from accredited universities in a related subject. ISLS Conference 2021: Paper Acceptance

We are happy to announce that Andria’s Agesilaou and Dr Eleni A. Kyza’s paper “Empowering students to be data literate: The design and implementation of a learning environment to foster critical data literacy” has been accepted to be presented as a full paper at the 2021 ISLS Annual Meeting, as a Full Paper Presentation. The theme of the Conference is “Reflecting the Past and Embracing the Future” and it will take place virtually between June 7 to 11, 2021.

Οnline Conference: Digital Education in Cyprus

The Cyprus Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, in collaboration with the local universities, organized an online conference on “Digital Education in Cyprus“.

The conference included introductory notes by Mr. Prodromos Prodromou, Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Mr. Kyriacos Kokkinos, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, and Dr. Athena Michaelidou, Director of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. 

Associate Professor Eleni A. Kyza, director of the Media Cognition and Learning Research Group and a member of  the national Advisory Committee on eLearning, contributed to the conference with the presentation entitled: “Effective distance education practices: What does the research tell us?”

With the recent shifts to distance and online learning mandated by emergency pandemic measures, this conference aimed to support and strengthen educational efforts to integrate digital technologies in learning.

Beside the suggestions from members of the Advisory Committee on eLearning, during the conference the Ministry also unveiled the policy for digital technology in education and practices applied in schools were also presented by teachers. The video of the conference and links to the presentations (all in Greek) can be found here.

AERA Conference 2021: Paper Acceptance

We are happy to announce that Dr Eleni A. Kyza and Christiana Varda’s paper “Countering the spread of misinformation on informal social media networks: Media Literacy Implications” has been accepted for the 2021 Virtual AERA Annual Meeting, in a Paper Session entitled “Media Literacy in a Time of Crisis”. The theme of the Conference is “Accepting Educational Responsibility” and it will take place virtually between April 9 to 12, 2021.

We are pleased to announce that Dr Eleni A. Kyza, Media Cognition and Learning Research Group’s Lead, has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth to serve in the Advisory Committee on eLearning. Her expertise in the design of technologies and web-based environments to support situated learning and reflective inquiry will certainly add to a productive dialogue that can inform the shape of digitally-mediated education in Cyprus.

Selected for Participation at ECREA Summer / Winter School 2021

Christiana Varda, PhD student and Research Associate at the Media, Cognition and Learning Research Group has been selected to participate at the ECREA European Media and Communication Doctoral Summer School 2020 where she will present her ongoing work focused on  “Online information encounters: Examining the role of critical reasoning in relation to accurate judgments of information on social media”. 

The Summer school was originally to take place at the University of Tartu, Tartu, Estonia in July 2020, but due to the coronavirus was moved to January 2021. However, the evolving situation of the pandemic has forced organizers to make the Summer School an online event which will take place virtually across December 2020, January and February 2021.

Call for Proposals “Combating Misinformation through Media Literacy” grants

The Department of Communication and Internet Studies of the Cyprus University of Technology, in partnership with the Horizon 2020 Co-Ιnform, project, the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Sport and Yout  and the Embassy of the United States of America in Cyprus, are pleased to announce a call for “Combating Misinformation through Media Literacy” grants.

The call asks for synergies between at least two sectors (journalists, teachers, policymakers, the civil society, etc.) to promote a multilateral approach in addressing the problem of misinformation.

A small number of projects will be selected, with available funding up to 25,000 euros each.

Please review the eligibility, selection criteria, and guidelines in the attached file before submitting an application.

The application deadline is Monday, February 3, 2020 at 23:59 Eastern European Time.
