Σύντομη περίληψη
The world is challenged by several risks, like climate change, biodiversity loss, or sufficient supply with needed resources. These developments are conceptualized by different organizers for a sustainable future, finally addressed by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) issued by the United Nations in 2015. Most of these SDGs are directly, or indirectly, connected to questions of science and technological developments. The talk will discuss selected concepts of sustainable development and how addressing them should have impact on modern science and technology education, from early childhood, via secondary and higher education, towards lifelong learning.

Σύντομο βιογραφικό ομιλητή
Prof. Dr. Ingo Eilks FRSC is a full professor for chemistry education at the University of Bremen, Germany, since 2004. From 2023, he additionally will work as an adjunct professor for science education at Universitas Negeri Malang, Indonesia. Having been educated as a high school teacher for chemistry and mathematics, he early engaged in the domain of chemistry education research and development. His research interests encompass, among others, socio-scientific issues-based science teaching, education for sustainable development, or innovations in higher education. For more than 20 years now, these interests are deeply connected to cooperatively working with teachers following specifically adopted models of action research in science education. Ingo Eilks has written so far about 600 articles, chapters, textbooks, or has co-edited different books and special issues in national and international journals. Recent achievements were the 2017 Award for the Incorporation of Sustainability into Chemical Education by the American Chemical Society, the invitation to be a lead author of the 2019 Global Chemicals Outlook II by the United Nations Environmental Program, or having been selected one of the STEM ambassadors of the year 2021 in Germany.

Aφορά στις/στους εκπαιδευτικούς Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης ιδιωτικών και δημόσιων σχολείων

Το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου ανακοινώνει σειρά βιωματικών εργαστηρίων για εν ενεργεία εκπαιδευτικούς Δημοτικής Εκπαίδεσης, με θέμα την ανάπτυξη ψηφιακών δεξιοτήτων, αξιοποιώντας το εργαλείο SELFIEforTEACHERS (SfT) της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής. To SfT αποτελεί ένα καινοτόμο διαδικτυακό εργαλείο το οποίο έχει σχεδιαστεί από το Joint Research Centre (JRC) της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής, ώστε να υποστηρίξει τον αναστοχασμό των εκπαιδευτικών σε σχέση με την αξιοποίηση των ψηφιακών τεχνολογιών στην επαγγελματική τους ανάπτυξη και διδασκαλία.

Ποιοι μπορούν να συμμετέχουν

Η παρούσα πρόσκληση αφορά εκπαιδευτικούς Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης, ιδιωτικών και δημόσιων σχολείων. Ο μέγιστος αριθμός συμμετεχόντων/ουσών είναι είκοσι (20) εκπαιδευτικοί Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης. Η συμμετοχή στο πρόγραμμα προϋποθέτει βασικές γνώσεις χρήσης της τεχνολογίας.

Κριτήρια επιλογής συμμετεχόντων

Η επιλογή των εκπαιδευτικών θα γίνει βάσει των ακόλουθων κριτηρίων:
(α) ημερομηνία υποβολής της αίτησης, και (β) δυνατότητα για ενεργή συμμετοχή με φυσική παρουσία στα βιωματικά σεμινάρια, τα οποία θα πραγματοποιηθούν στο Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου.

Διάρκεια προγράμματος

Το πρόγραμμα θα λειτουργήσει από τον Φεβρουάριο μέχρι και τον Μάιο του 2023. Κατά τη διάρκεια αυτή θα οργανωθούν τέσσερα (4) βιωματικά εργαστήρια, τα οποία θα πραγματοποιηθούν στη Λεμεσό (ΤΕΠΑΚ), στις ακόλουθες ημερομηνίες/ώρες:

• Σάββατο, 11/2/2023 (08:30-13:30)
• Σάββατο, 25/2/2023 (08:30-13:30)
• Σάββατο, 11/3/2023 (08:30-13:30)
• Σάββατο, 08/4/2023 (08:30-13:30)

Επιπλέον, το πρόγραμμα θα ολοκληρωθεί με δημόσια εκδήλωση στην οποία θα πραγματοποιηθεί παρουσίαση των βασικών πορισμάτων.

• Συμμετάσχεις σε δομημένες δραστηριότητες επαγγελματικού αναστοχασμού τόσο σε ατομικό όσο και σε συνεργατικό επίπεδο
• Συν-σχεδιάσεις και να υλοποιήσεις σχέδια δράσης με στόχο τη βελτίωση των ψηφιακών σου δεξιοτήτων.

Πιστοποιητικό συμμετοχής

Με την ολοκλήρωση του προγράμματος θα δοθούν επίσημα πιστοποιητικά παρακολούθησης από το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου.

Applications are invited from candidates who possess the necessary qualifications in order to fill one (1) Part-time Research Fellow position (Postgraduate Associate / Assistant Researcher A or Postdoctoral Researcher) in the field of Teachers’ Digital Literacy with the Department of Communication and Internet Studies, at the Cyprus University of Technology.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant(s) will help implement a research programme on teachers’ digital literacy with the Media, Cognition and Learning Research Group. In addition, they will perform project management work, and other administrative duties, related to the projects they are assigned to.

Qualifications

The applicants should have:

• At a minimum, a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Educational Technology, Psychology or the Learning Sciences.
• Strong background in research methods.
• Excellent knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data analysis software.
• Very good language and communication / implementation skills.
• Demonstrated good knowledge of the Greek and English languages (spoken and written)

The following will be considered as an advantage:

1. Prior experience in research in a related field.
2. Prior participation in funded national or European research programmes.
3. Publications in peer-reviewed journals or conferences (as main authors or co-authors of journal articles published in peer-reviewed journals)

Applicants with a Ph.D. degree are also encouraged to apply. Knowledge of the Greek language is desirable but not required. Residency in Cyprus is required.

Τhe appointment will be for a period of six (6) months with the prospect of renewal. The monthly gross salary for the position will be between €1200 and €1566,57 according to qualifications. It is noted that there is provision for 13th salary (the cost of the 13th salary has been proportionally incorporated in the monthly remuneration as analyzed above).

We are happy to announce that the Media Cognition and Learning Research Group will be presenting two papers at the First Annual Greek Speaking Conference of Communication Labs, which will take place 25-26 June 2022, online.

Dr Yiannis Georgiou and Dr Eleni A. Kyza’s paper “Ιnvestigating the coupling between locality and digital narrative in AR immersive learning experiences” (Διερευνώντας τη σύνδεση φυσικού χώρου-ψηφιακής αφήγησης σε μαθησιακές εμπειρίες εμβύθισης μέσω επαυξημένης πραγματικότητας) has been accepted.

Additionally, Markos Souropetsis and Dr Eleni A. Kyza’s paper “CompARe: Design and development of a gamified mixed reality learning environment for cultural heritage sites ” (CompARe: Σχεδιασμός και ανάπτυξη ενός παιχνιδοποιημένου μαθησιακού περιβάλλοντος μικτής πραγματικότητας σε χώρους πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς) has been accepted.

We are happy to announce that Christiana Varda, a PhD student at the Media Cognition and Learning Research Group, has been elected Communications Officer of the International Learning Sciences Student Association Committee.

Christiana will serve a one-year term in the position, and her term will be inaugurated at the 2022 International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS) Conference.

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the role of digital education in modern times and emphasized the importance of digital competencies for educators and students of all levels. The need to change traditional learning and teaching models is now more evident than ever; at the same time, it is evident that there is a need to explore the elements that can contribute to upgrading the quality of online learning and teaching. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the digital competencies and skills that can contribute to collaboration and the self-regulation of learning and teaching, in the context of technology-supported hybrid learning environments. A potential area of inquiry may, for example, be the kinds of support that teachers (at the higher, secondary, or primary school level) need to identify and support the needs of students in distance or hybrid learning settings. The exact topic will be determined in collaboration with the student. Fields of application can be university courses, MOOCs, gamified learning environments, or a combination thereof.

Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited university on a topic that is relevant to the advertised area (e.g., Education or Psychology or ICT), and a Master’s degree in a subject which complements the knowledge and skills acquired during the basic studies in any one of the above three areas (e.g., educational technology). Applicants should demonstrate strong academic and methodological background, as evidenced by their CV and university transcripts, and a very good knowledge of spoken and written English. The applicants are requested to submit: (a) A cover page briefly explaining their interest in the position, (b) their CV in English or Greek, (c) a preliminary research proposal in relation to the description of the position, in English and Greek (up to 2 pages), (d) two letters of recommendation, preferably from university professors.

Funding: For the above position there is the intention by the Department to involve PhD candidates, contingent on their background, as teaching assistants, or offer them employment in research programs for partial coverage of tuition fees.

Christiana Varda, PhD student and Research Associate at the Media, Cognition and Learning Research Group, has been selected to participate at EARLI Joint SIG 8 & 16 Summer School 2022, where she will present her ongoing work focused on “Informal learning on social media: Understanding the role of emotions in supporting epistemic engagement during online information evaluation”.

The Summer school is offered as part of the European Association for Learning and Instruction Special Interest Groups for Emotion and Motivation (SIG 8) and Metacognition (SIG16) will take place in Dresden, Germany in August 2022.
